Mine Own Executioner 2004

Each year the Mundaring Arts Centre invite a number of artists to make a self portrait for this annmual show.

I took the opportunity to make a work that contained a number of ironic / iconic references to my interests and preoccupations form the previous 3 years. The title 'Reasons to be Cheerful' springs from a song from the British group who were active in the 80's + 90's - Ian Drury and the Blockheads.

The size and format of the work suggest a ship, containing my preoccupations. The work was  a combination of drawing media that I had been experimenting with - wet and dry media on a prepared faux gesso surface. The 4 shaped semi oval self portrait paintings atop of the rectilinear work suggest the funnels of the ship.
